Canvas Framing: All You Need to Know

canvas framing

A beautiful work of art is worth protecting, and canvas framing is one of the easiest and most attractive ways to look after the piece. The right frame complements a painting elegantly and stylishly, but a poorly chosen one can make even a masterpiece look tacky or inappropriate. Whether you’re planning to display your artwork in your home, office or art gallery, the way you frame a painting is as important as the work itself.

Luckily, choosing the right picture frame doesn’t have to be expensive and it doesn’t have to be a lot of pressure. Mobile Frames 2 U can make the task easy for you. You don’t even have to leave the house!

Ready to get started? Here is the Mobile Frames 2 U guide to all you need to know about canvas framing

What is canvas framing?

Canvas framing is a process that usually involves two kinds of (usually wooden) frames. Before hanging, every canvas has to be stretched over a frame to preserve it and get it ready for display. After that, it can either be hung with or without a frame. Nowadays, many people are choosing floating frames, a sleekly contemporary framing option that creates the sense of your artwork “floating” within the frame. Floating frames surround your piece with a 5mm gap that allows it to look like it’s suspended in mid-air. This technique creates depth and dimension and makes your canvas look more beautiful, eye-catching and complete.

Canvas framing always begins with stretching the canvas over the wooden frame (also called the stretcher bars) to make the surface smooth and taut. While canvas stretcher bars come in a range of styles and designs, there are two main types to choose from. Gallery-style frames are made up of two side rails, a top rail and a backboard. Floater-style frames are very similar apart from the backboard: the artwork is stretched over a spacer bar instead.

Choosing the right canvas frame requires considering the style of the artwork, the colour and size of the frame and the décor of the rest of your room. With a keen eye for detail and some preparation, however, you can explore your creativity while making sure the styles don’t clash.

The benefits of canvas framing

Some of the biggest advantages to framing your canvas include:

  • It protects your paintings from dirt, dust and sun damage.
  • It improves the overall presentation of your artwork and gives it a more “finished” look.
  • It can increase the lifespan of your artwork, preserve its beauty and boost its resale value.
  • It provides structural support to the canvas that stops it from growing saggy or warped over time.
  • It complements the colours and style of the artwork, making it look more professional and gallery-ready.

How to make a canvas frame

If you’re planning to build a canvas frame from scratch, you need to start with the right tools, including a level, hammer, saw, nails and measuring tape.

Measure the artwork and cut the frame pieces to fit, using a level to ensure the frame stays straight.

To start assembling the frame, attach the side rails to the top and the bottom of the artwork. Next, attach the top rails to the side ones. After that, add a backboard and secure it in place.

You’ll need to make sure your frame is sufficiently stretched out and tight. If your artwork was created with acrylic paint, you’ll need to use a UV-resistant glass or plexiglass to cover it.

If you don’t have the time, the tools or the patience to build your own canvas frame from scratch, Mobile Frames 2 U will make it easy for you. Our framing services provide the best and simplest option.
